Cellist of the Rautio Piano Trio, Victoria was the principal cellist of Opera North and plays as a guest principal across the UK.
London-based cellist Victoria Simonsen grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, and her early love of music was encouraged by her concert-pianist mother.
Victoria studied cello at the Royal Northern College of Music with Ralph Kirshbaum and Karine Georgian and in 2006 graduated with the Gold Medal. She later continued her studies with Julius Berger at the Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum der Universität Augsburg.
As a passionate chamber musician, Victoria is regularly invited to the IMS Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music. The cellist of the Barbirolli Quartet for six years, from 2015 she will be a member of the Rautio Piano
Victoria is the former Principal Cellist with Opera North (2005-07) and has appeared as Guest Principal with many of the UK's major orchestras. Since 2008 she has held a position with the renowned Philharmonia Orchestra, whom she first heard perform live as a young student in New Zealand, and she combines this orchestra's busy schedule with her own chamber music and solo work.
Highlights in 2014 included cello tutor on the EUYO's summer course, a tour of South America as a member of the Philharmonia and performances at the Proms as Guest Principal Cellist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
She is looking forward to performing a 15-concert tour for Chamber Music New Zealand in June 2015.
