Adam MacKenzie - Bassoon
Chamber Musician and principal bassoon of Sinfonia Viva and English Sinfonia
Born in Plymouth but raised in the Highlands of Scotland, Adam Mackenzie began playing the bassoon in school, quickly joined the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and gained entrance to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he won numerous awards and graduated with first class honours.
Whilst studying for his postgraduate degree (also at Guildhall), Adam was runner-up in the final of the Guildhall Gold Medal Competition (a unique achievement for a bassoonist).
Adam went on to win the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Staffa Prize and during the same year was a selected recitalist for the Park Lane Group Series, performing a solo recital in the Purcell Room.
A passionate chamber musician, Adam performs with groups such as Ensemble 360˚, Endymion, the Dante Quartet, Red Note Ensemble and many others. He is also a member of Chamber Domaine (who’s latest acclaimed CD Journey to Aldeburgh: Young Britten can be found at www.resonusclassics.com/chamber-domaine) and the New London Chamber Ensemble (who’s next album of Martin Butler’s music, including a setting of Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts, will be released by NMC before Christmas).
Adam has made many other recordings of chamber music with these groups and has also contributed two CDs to the recording of the complete bassoon syllabus for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
Following his return from a year at the Accademia della Scala, Milan, Adam embarked on what has become a varied and exciting career. Adam is the principal bassoonist of Sinfonia ViVA and English Sinfonia and plays regularly as principal bassoon with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
He is fortunate to be able to combine this with his other musical passion, outreach and education work. As one of London’s most in demand freelance workshop musicians, Adam works regularly with all the major London orchestral education departments. He has recently been appointed Director of Education for English Sinfonia and Head of Education for Brandenburg Sinfonia.
