Ted Hobart - Trumpet
Upon completing his studies at the London College and Royal College of Music, Ted embarked on a busy and varied professional career. He was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company’s resident wind band from 1968- 1971 and in 1975 joined English National Opera as Co- Principal Trumpet.
A lengthy period of freelancing followed, including many West End shows (Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Blood Brothers), studio recordings and film sessions, notably Superman, The Odessa file, Aces High, Chaplin, Dangerous Liaisons and The Scarlet Letter. Ted has also played on numerous sound tracks for artists including Paul McCartney, Cliff Richard, Swing Out Sister and Mike Oldfield and his work features on the Sony Audio and DVD of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, with soloist Wynton Marsalis.
Ted was a member of The English Chamber Orchestra for 35 years (often playing Principal), Principal of The London Concert Orchestra and the Mozart Festival Orchestra. He has played with London Brass on several occasions and performed with them at Westminster Cathedral in 2010 for the visit of Pope Benedict XV1. He has performed regularly over many years with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Opera House.
In March 2012 Ted was invited to play with the St Petersburg Orchestra at the Barbican to mark the70th anniversary of the Leningrad Symphony under Temirkanov. Teaching has always been an important feature of Ted’s work, with a particular focus on correcting embouchure faults, developing strength and endurance and improving practice procedures. He has extensive experience of working with children, young people and adults of all ages!
