Minsi Yang - Violinist

Freelance Violinist and Teacher, lessons available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese

Born in Zhongshan, China, Minsi started learning the violin at the age of six. The violin has taken her all over the world - so far she has lived in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and China, and has performed extensively throughout these countries as well as in Australia and throughout Europe.

In 2002, she moved to New Zealand to pursue her undergraduate violin studies with Professor Kim (Zhongxian) Jin at Victoria University of Wellington. Following this, she completed a Masters in Auckland University under the guidance of Dimitri Atanassov and Elizabeth Holowell.

Having had the opportunity to work with various teachers has made Minsi into a passionate teacher herself. She has been teaching privately for the past 10 years in both New Zealand and London; she has also taught in Raroa Music Centre and Lewis Eady Music School in New Zealand.

Having worked for the Auckland Philharmonia Summer School project, she also has coached chamber groups and orchestral sections. As a teacher, she recognizes the individuality of all of her students, and makes sure to tailor her teaching style to best suit their needs.

During her time in New Zealand, she worked regularly with all the major New Zealand orchestras and ensembles, including New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and NBR National Opera.

Having arrived in London as a member of Southbank Sinfonia in 2012, she has been rapidly establishing her musical career in Britain. She is currently on trial with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as well as freelancing with several major British professional orchestras. These have included the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Opera and Opera North.

She also enjoys working with the theatre, having performed in the on-stage quartet in the National Theatre for Alan Bennett/George Fenton’s production “Hymn” in 2012-2013; and in the on-stage band for the premiere of the new musical “Yusupov” in Bernie Grants Arts Centre. In 2007, Minsi recorded a solo violin improvisation for the award-winning movie “Rain of the Children” by Vincent Ward, which won the Grand Prix at Era New Horizons Film Festival - a major International Film Festival in Poland.

Review from Michael Lee, Aged 8:

'Minsi has been my violin teacher for a few years now. She has taught me to listen to my playing and to help me develop as a violinist for both school events as well as my grade exams. She is patient and explains things clearly to me.'
