Frances Wilson - Performance Coach

Diploma Mentoring

A classically-trained pianist with over 35 years playing experience, Frances Wilson holds Licentiate and Associate Performance Diplomas (both with Distinction) from Trinity College London, and runs a popular and piano teaching practice from her home in SW London.

Having taken Performance Diplomas in her mid-40s, Frances has a particular understanding of the issues facing adult pianists in particular who are considering further study beyond Grade 8. A natural communicator with both children and adults, she also has considerable experience in teaching and mentoring teenagers and young people.

Frances offers specialist mentoring to people who are preparing for performance diplomas with TrinityAssociated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and London College of Music examining boards.

Her help includes:

  • Devising a programme
  • Understanding the syllabus and regulations
  • Writing programme notes
  • Stagecraft and presentation skills
  • Managing performance anxiety

From 2008 to 2014 Frances studied privately with Penelope Roskell, Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at Trinity-Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, and now studies with acclaimed teacher, pianist and writer Graham Fitch. She has attended masterclasses with internationally-renowned concert pianists Murray McLachlan, Norma Fisher, and Carlo Grante, and more recently with Christine Croshaw and Charlotte Tomlinson. She has also taken private tuition with Alan Fraser and James Lisney. She regularly attends courses for advanced pianists and engages in continuing professional development to enhance her teaching and performance skills.

A passionate advocate of adult amateur pianism, Frances is co-founder of London Piano Events (formerly London Piano Meetup Group), which organises informal performance opportunities and other events for adult pianists in London, and is Artistic Director of the South London Concert Series, an innovative concert concept in which talented amateur pianists have the opportunity to perform in a formal concert setting alongside young and emerging professional and semi-professional artists.

Alongside this, Frances also blogs on classical music and pianism as The Cross-Eyed Pianist and writes a regular monthly column for 'Pianist' magazine's online content on various aspects of piano playing.

“A teacher who has a firm knowledge of the matter in hand and who combines this with charisma and fun to ensure that students of all ages gain confidence and pleasure”

“….an excellent teacher, with an undoubted gift for communicating the techniques and the joys of piano playing…… In sum, she is a class act.”

 “Very accomplished and controlled playing”
