John Roberts - Oboe
Principal Oboe of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Born in Glasgow, John studied at the Royal College of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music. Since 2011, John has worked as an orchestral principal oboe throughout the UK and Ireland, and since 2013 he has held the position of Principal Oboe in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Outside the RPO he has played extensively worldwide with such orchestras as the LSO, BBC Symphony Orchestra, the LPO, and the Philharmonia.
Throughout this time John has had the privilege of working with such great conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink, Valery Gergiev, Sakari Oramo, Semyon Bychkov, Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop, Robin Ticciati, Vasily Petrenko and Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla.
John has toured extensively with smaller orchestras under the phenomenal player-directors Pinchas Zukerman (with the RPO), Joshua Bell and Murray Perahia (both with The Academy of St Martin in the Fields).
As well as orchestral concerts, John likes to participate in music making on a smaller scale as much as possible. He regularly performs in Classical Pop Ups, a series of one-off gatherings featuring chamber music in eclectic venues around the capital, and has performed for Nonclassical, who present classical, contemporary and crossover music in spaces normally associated with the pop music scene.
He has also performed with wind ensembles in chamber music festivals nationwide such as The West End Festival in Glasgow and Cerne Abbas Festival in Dorset. Recent performances in London have included appearances with London Winds and London Sinfonietta.
As a concerto soloist John has played in diverse venues from London’s Cadogan Hall to the Presidential Palace in Libreville, Gabon. Recent performances include Brandenburg 3 with the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Vaughan Williams Concerto with Jac Van Steen and the RPO.
John is a lover of the great outdoors and in particular a keen rider of bikes, and enjoys eating and drinking well.
'The few lessons I've had with John have been so packed full of information and incredible musical detail. They have been a great help in my further understanding of the consistency and quality needed in the profession, and he was able to show me a path for taking my playing to the next level.' - Chris
