Patrick Tapio Johnson

Patrick Tapio Johnson - Cello

Freelance cellist and teacher

Described by critics as 'a true artist of the cello', Patrick Tapio Johnson has performed in all of London's major concert halls, often as principal cellist, soloist or chamber musicians.

For two seasons, Patrick was principal cello for the National Theatre’s critically-acclaimed revival of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus. He has worked with many major UK orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; and as a member of Southbank Sinfonia, the Royal Opera House, BBC Concert Orchestra, and Academy of St-Martin-in-the-Fields. He has performed under the batons of many eminent conductors, including Sir Antonio Pappano, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Marin Alsop, John Wilson and Yuri Temirkanov.

Additionally, he was principal cello in a very memorable concert in the Royal Albert Hall with hard rock legends Deep Purple, and has also performed with Damon Albarn, Bruce Dickinson, Tony Hadley and Goldfrapp. He also regularly plays principal cello for Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End.

Patrick has appeared in recital with many celebrated musicians, including the pianists Leslie Howard and Mark Viner, and the cellist Giovanni Sollima. A passionate promoter of new music, he has given world premieres of many works for solo cello, plus many more chamber works; he is also the dedicatee of Logos, a new concerto by the composer Marc Yeats.

Patrick currently teaches cello at Queen Mary University of London, the Cavendish School, Mount House School, and his own private studio. Additionally, he has given televised masterclasses in Guangdong, China. He teaches across all ranges of age and ability, always looking out for passion and dedication in potential students.

Patrick plays on a mysterious 18th-century cello, believed to be Italian and converted from a five-string violoncello piccolo; this is strung with gut strings by Eudoxa and Oliv, and paired with a very fine French bow by Charles Nicolas Bazin.

He lives in London with his wife, the violinist Minsi Yang, and their son Markus.

“A true artist of the cello, who coped with the myriad challenges of the work in admirable and compelling fashion… a performance that can only be described as revelatory.” - Robert Matthew-Walker, Musical Opinion

"Patrick Johnson introduced my eight-year old son to the Cello and taught him for eighteen months. He was thorough and patient, particularly in ensuring good playing position and accurate intonation, and always encouraged musicality and enthusiasm. He provided my son with a solid basis from which to take his studies further and we were sorry when he was no longer able to teach in our area." - Lesley

"Paddy was my first cello teacher, I really liked him and I doubt I would be doing nearly as well if I had started with another teacher." - Isaac
